1. Union Cabinet approves Green Energy Corridor Phase-III with Rs 1,86,405 crore outlay

Union Cabinet · 30 September 2026

The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme. It strengthens the intra-state transmission system to enable evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across States and Union Territories. It also provides for 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the renewable energy developer or generator end, or at other locations important for grid flexibility, to address intermittency, congestion, peak-hour curtailment and non-solar hour demand. Total outlay is Rs 1,86,405 crore: Rs 1,36,378 crore for intra-state transmission and Rs 50,000 crore for the BESS. Total Central Financial Support is Rs 54,082 crore, and the Central Financial Assistance will help offset intra-state transmission charges.

All greenfield projects under the transmission component will be implemented through tariff based competitive bidding, with transmission service providers participating on a build-own-operate-maintain (BOOM) model. Brownfield upgradation and network strengthening will be done on a cost plus basis. State Transmission Utilities are the overall implementing agencies. The scheme is targeted for completion by FY 2032-33 and is linked to the target of 900 GW of installed non-fossil capacity by 2035.

Why it matters for wind: Intra-state lines and substations are where wind evacuation often gets held up, so funding at this level matters for connectivity and curtailment risk. Storage at the generator end aimed at non-solar hours also speaks directly to wind's dispatch profile. Developers should track their State Transmission Utility's tender plans under the scheme.
