1. CERC staff paper discusses options for a capacity market for electricity in India

CERC · 29 April 2026

CERC has issued a staff paper titled Capacity Market for Electricity in India and hosted it for comments and suggestions of stakeholders. The paper discusses options for capacity contracting in India. The proposals depart from the existing contracting design and seek to allocate risks to both buyers and sellers appropriately, while indexing capacity contract terms, dispatch and pricing to the energy market.

Comments and suggestions are due by 27 May 2026.

Why it matters for wind: How capacity is contracted decides whether firm and dispatchable products can earn a capacity payment, which matters for wind paired with storage in FDRE and round-the-clock bids. It is a discussion paper, so comments by 27 May are the window to shape it.
